 A Little About Me

Every thousand-mile journey begins with one step. (Lao Tzu) Having raised five children, I took my first step to becoming a teacher in 1995. I graduated with my Associate's Degree when my oldest son graduated from high school. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree when my two daughters graduated from high school. Since then, my children eventually graduated into parenthood, and I graduated into 'grand' parenthood. My husband and I have nine grandchildren--ages 18 months to 21 years. Learning to be a parent, a grandparent, and eventually, a teacher proves "There is no finish line in learning." (Carol Ann Tomlinson) I continue to learn. As a matter of fact, while most were on summer vacation in July, I was in class learning strategies to support the learning of my students.

Of course, all work and no play makes for a very boring day. That is why I enjoy spending time with our favorite child. Meet Thundergirl. She showed up at our house two years ago and adopted us sight unseen. She loves us and we love her. She loves doing tricks for treats and going for rides in the truck.

I feel very honored to have served and continue to serve the learning community of Pickens County for more than 25 years. Though I do not live in Pickens, I feel like it is my home away from home. I am very excited to meet and get to know my students and their parents. I am even more excited when I think about what I might learn from my students. Nothing pleases me more than to hear a student say, "Oh, don't worry Mrs. Gordy. I can help with that." I have a motto, "If it isn't fun, it doesn't get done." We work, we learn, we laugh, and we progress. It is not about winning and losing. It is about how we play the game. Some days are for winning and some days are for learning. Together, we got this!

Please know that you may reach me through email at sonjagordy@pickenscountyschools.org, or by phone at 706-253-1830, ext. 107. I have included my schedule. I will do my best to reply to messages before I leave for the day.

This year I will have the honor of working with 7th-grade math students. It is my hope that each of my students will strive to be in class as much as possible. Though you will be given adequate time to make up any missed assignment, I will miss you dearly and that time can never be made up.
